Each had a story of persecution and abuse.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>by Leila Adilzhan<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/womens-protest-against-re-education-camps-in-China.jpeg\" alt=\"An image of the women\u2019s protest.\" class=\"wp-image-25832\"\/><figcaption><em>An image of the women\u2019s protest.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is still cold in Almaty, Kazakhstan, but this did not deter women who have their loved ones detained in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>&nbsp;from taking to the streets and demonstrate in front of the Chinese consulate. On March 8, Women\u2019s Day, we pay our respects to the world\u2019s women. But these Kazakh mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters got no respect from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/ccp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CCP<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/ethnic-kazakhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ethnic Kazakhs<\/a>&nbsp;continue, together with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/uyghurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uyghurs<\/a>&nbsp;and other Turkic Muslims, to be detained in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>, either in the dreaded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/transformation-through-education-camps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transformation through education camps<\/a>&nbsp;or in prisons.https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M3SA7iKUa78?enablejsapi=1&amp;autoplay=0&amp;cc_load_policy=0&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;loop=0&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;fs=1&amp;playsinline=0&amp;controls=1&amp;color=red&amp;cc_lang_pref=&amp;rel=0&amp;autohide=2&amp;theme=dark&amp;<em>The video of the women\u2019s protest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Halida Akhytkhan has lost her entire family. \u201cIn 2018, she says, they arrested my three sons\u2014Rahimbergen Satipaldi, Rahimbergen Orazjan, and Rahimbergen Ahimetjan\u2014and their wives. Then put them all into the concentration camps. My daughters-in-law were sentenced to prison terms from 2 to 6 years, while 28 years were given to my two elderly sons, and 10 years to my youngest son.\u201d Halida is very popular on the Web, where she tells her story as a grandmother of 14 boys and girls living in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>\u2014but she does not know where they have been taken now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Halida-Akhytkhan.jpeg\" alt=\"Halida Akhytkhan.\" class=\"wp-image-25833\"\/><figcaption><em>Halida Akhytkhan.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their men are accused of \u201cseparatism\u201d or \u201creligious extremism.\u201d But Gulbaran Omirali says Azamat Aibolat, the 23-year-old son of her brother, was arrested just for performing&nbsp;<em>namaz<\/em>, the prayer in direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, and he believed it was not forbidden. He was wrong. In April 2018, he was arrested, and he was later sentenced to 15 years in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/jail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jail<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Gulbaran-Omirali.jpeg\" alt=\"Gulbaran Omirali.\" class=\"wp-image-25834\"\/><figcaption><em>Gulbaran Omirali.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bikamal Kaken is the wife of Alimhazi Mukhay. \u201cI haven\u2019t seen him in the last four years, she says. I do not have clues whether he is alive or not.\u201d She knows he was sentenced to 9 years in prison for planning to flee to Kazakhstan and sending there his family. &nbsp;A little girl, the daughter of Alimhazi Mukhay, also wanted to participate in the protest. \u201cI am not well today, she says, but I still come to help my father. Dear president [of Kazakhstan], I trust you can help us to bring my father home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Bikamal-Kaken.jpeg\" alt=\"Bikamal Kaken.\" class=\"wp-image-25835\"\/><figcaption><em>Bikamal Kaken.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurjauar Muhamethan also has a brother sentenced to 12 years in prison for performing&nbsp;<em>namaz<\/em>, something increasingly perceived as provocative in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Nurjauar-Muhamethan.jpeg\" alt=\"Nurjauar Muhamethan.\" class=\"wp-image-25836\"\/><figcaption><em>Nurjauar Muhamethan.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ardah Kayrkan has a brother and a son, Yerbolat Muhametkaly, detained in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ardah-Kayrkan.jpeg\" alt=\"Ardah Kayrkan.\" class=\"wp-image-25837\"\/><figcaption><em>Ardah Kayrkan.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tursingul Nurahay\u2019s husband, Zharkinbek Kasimbay, was arrested in Bole city,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>, and sentenced to 10 years in prison. \u201cHis crime was to have lived in Kazakhstan for a while, she explains, and to love the Kazakh nation and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Tursingul-Nurahay.jpeg\" alt=\"Tursingul Nurahay.\" class=\"wp-image-25838\"\/><figcaption><em>Tursingul Nurahay.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gulpayam Kazibek reports that her mother, Anarhan Hanatbek, was sentenced to 12 years in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/jail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jail<\/a>. She is now in Yining City\u2019s No. 7 Women\u2019s Prison.https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qshEUlgxzUs?enablejsapi=1&amp;autoplay=0&amp;cc_load_policy=0&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;loop=0&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;fs=1&amp;playsinline=0&amp;controls=1&amp;color=red&amp;cc_lang_pref=&amp;rel=0&amp;autohide=2&amp;theme=dark&amp;<em>The testimony of Gulpayam Kazibek.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurzat Yermekbay, has another&nbsp;<em>namaz&nbsp;<\/em>story. \u201cMy brother, Birlesbek Yermekbai, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the reason of performing&nbsp;<em>namaz<\/em>,\u201d she reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Nurzat-Yermekbay.jpeg\" alt=\"Nurzat Yermekbay\" class=\"wp-image-25839\"\/><figcaption><em>Nurzat Yermekbay.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kumishan Baban is the sister of the well-known singer and composer Kalysbek Baban, the author of more than 60 songs. Both he and his wife Giminkhan Bagdangul were taken to the camps in 2015. They were later released but remained under surveillance. In December 2019, Kalysbek was arrested again and is currently in a prison in the Kutubi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">district<\/a>&nbsp;of the Sanji region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Kumishan-Baban.jpeg\" alt=\"Kumishan Baban.\" class=\"wp-image-25840\"\/><figcaption><em>Kumishan Baban.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paryda Kabilbek reports that her husband, Rahizhan Zeynolla, after returning to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>&nbsp;from Kazakhstan, was accused of espionage and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Having served the full term, he hoped to be free, but was taken to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/transformation-through-education-camps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transformation through education camps<\/a>. \u201cAll requests by relatives to meet him have been denied,\u201d she says. Paryda had some interaction with personnel from the Chinese consulate. One told her, \u201cWhat if China will conquer Kazakhstan in the future?\u201d\u2014words that, when reported, caused a great indignation in Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Paryda-Kabilbek.jpeg\" alt=\"Paryda Kabilbek.\" class=\"wp-image-25841\"\/><figcaption><em>Paryda Kabilbek.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the son of Zauatkan Tursin, a young man called Baymurat Naurizbek, it went the other way round. After he was released from a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/transformation-through-education-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transformation through education camp<\/a>, he was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison. He is now in the Wusu&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/jail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jail<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Zauatkan-Tursin.jpeg\" alt=\"Zauatkan Tursin.\" class=\"wp-image-25842\"\/><figcaption><em>Zauatkan Tursin.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Kazakhstan, women protest also in front of the Chinese consulate in Istanbul. They include Gulaisha Oralbay who advocates with her daughter Malika for two sisters and one brother\u2014Bagila Oralbay, Baktygul Oralbay and Dilshat Oralbay. The latter, Dilshat Oralbay, is an award-winning author and translator. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Baktygul Oralbay was the owner of a publishing house. She was sentenced to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/jail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jail<\/a>&nbsp;term of 19 years. Bagila Oralbay had a hair beauty studio, and got 15 years. The family was never allowed to see the court decisions, and Gulaisha suspects the reason behind the heavy sentences was that they were prominent members of the ethnic Kazakh intellectual community in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Gulaisha-Oralbay.jpeg\" alt=\"Gulaisha Oralbay advocating for her siblings in Istanbul.\" class=\"wp-image-25843\"\/><figcaption><em>Gulaisha Oralbay advocating for her siblings in Istanbul.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These women who demonstrate in Kazakhstan and Turkey are, at least, free. Others are themselves in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/Vocabulary\/xinjiang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xinjiang<\/a>&nbsp;camps, where torture is common, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bitterwinter.org\/systematic-rape-in-xinjiang-camps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rape is a routine<\/a>.
