{"id":1973,"date":"2020-10-22T00:02:18","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T15:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yuzb.net\/en\/?p=1973"},"modified":"2020-10-22T00:02:18","modified_gmt":"2020-10-21T15:02:18","slug":"chinese-police-still-questioning-wife-of-australian-uyghur-man-despite-promising-to-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yuzb.net\/en\/2020\/10\/22\/chinese-police-still-questioning-wife-of-australian-uyghur-man-despite-promising-to-help\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese police still questioning wife of Australian Uyghur man, despite promising to help"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Posted\u00a0WedWednesday\u00a024\u00a0JulJuly\u00a02019\u00a0at\u00a02:07pm,\u00a0updated\u00a0WedWednesday\u00a024\u00a0JulJuly\u00a02019\u00a0at\u00a010:51pm<br>https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-24\/chinese-police-questioning-wife-of-australian-uyghur-man\/11341924?fbclid=IwAR0BBTIcfvXRr8qdu6q7RqR0v_lbUuXPEkZsrVZIVshAfUdD4rZZchRqLxo <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police in China&#8217;s far-western Xinjiang region are still questioning the wife of an Australian man interviewed on Four Corners last week, despite Beijing saying it would assist Australia&#8217;s efforts to reunite the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key points:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li class=\"\">Nadila Wumaier and her Australian son Lutfy are not allowed to leave Xinjiang<\/li><li class=\"\">Her husband Sadam is appealing for China to let them join him in Sydney<\/li><li class=\"\">They are Uyghurs, a Muslim minority facing state-led persecution in China<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadam Abudusalamu has been separated from his wife Nadila Wumaier and their young son Lutfy, who is an Australian citizen, since they were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-14\/chinas-crackdown-on-uyghurs-tearing-families-apart\/11221614\">caught up in China&#8217;s crackdown on Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is estimated that more than 1 million Uyghurs are currently being detained in re-education camps in Xinjiang, while those not detained have had their passports taken away, making it impossible for them to leave China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under these policies, Mr Abudusalamu has not seen his wife in two years, and he has never met baby Lutfy, who will turn two next month.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-14\/chinas-crackdown-on-uyghurs-tearing-families-apart\/11221614\">Why won&#8217;t China let this two-year-old Australian boy leave?It appears to be the largest imprisonment of people on the basis of religion since the Holocaust: More than a million people have been rounded up, detained and forcibly indoctrinated by the Chinese Government.<strong>Read more<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Mr Abudusalamu spoke out about his family&#8217;s predicament on Four Corners, police in Xinjiang took Nadila away for questioning \u2014 however Beijing later said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-18\/china-will-offer-help-after-australia-request-uyghur-release\/11320996\">it would offer &#8220;necessary assistance&#8221;<\/a>, after Australia&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-17\/uyghur-china-response-four-corners-xinjiang-detention\/11316752\">formally requested Nadila and Lutfy be allowed to leave the country<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite these public statements, Mr Abudusalamu told Radio National Breakfast his wife was still being subjected to frequent police interrogations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;She has been taken every day until now, every day by the police, but I don&#8217;t want to mention what they&#8217;re asking,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They forced [her] to sign some papers, it&#8217;s been really tough for her \u2014 she&#8217;s really scared, she&#8217;s really worried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Every day she&#8217;s telling me &#8216;what am I going to do if I lose my son, what am I going to do if I lose you?'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Abudusalamu said police had told Nadila they wanted him to stop advocating for her and Lutfy, but he said that was not going to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;They&#8217;ve been telling her to tell your husband to be silent, but as a dad, as a husband, I&#8217;m not going to stop until I see them in Sydney Airport.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Watch the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iview.abc.net.au\/show\/four-corners\">full Four Corners episode<\/a>&nbsp;on ABC iView.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;We only want to reunite with our family&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"11342762\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/cm\/rimage\/11342740-3x2-xlarge.jpg?v=2\" alt=\"Almas Nizamidin, Craig Foster and Sadam Abudusalamu stand at the front of Parliament House.\"\/><figcaption>Almas Nizamidin (left) and Sadam Abudusalamu (right), with former Socceroos captain Craig Foster, were to visit Parliament to lobby politicians.(Twitter: Craig Foster)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Abudusalamu, as well as fellow Uyghur Australian Almas Nizamidin, were expected to meet with federal politicians on Wednesday at Parliament House to ask about speeding-up efforts to bring their families to Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are being supported by Amnesty International Australia and former Socceroos captain and broadcaster Craig Foster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two were due to meet Immigration Minister David Coleman, officials from Prime Minister Scott Morrison&#8217;s office, and a number of other senior politicians from both the major parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a press conference on Wednesday morning, Mr Nizamidin, who was also interviewed on Four Corners, said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-06-24\/uighur-community-in-australia-fear-reports-of-crackdown-in-china\/9824554\">he has not been able to contact his wife Buzainafu since her arrest in the city of Urumqi in March 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"11342714\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/cm\/rimage\/9835542-3x4-xlarge.jpg?v=3\" alt=\"Mr Nizamidin with his wife and mother who are both now under detention.\"\/><figcaption>Mr Nizamidin with his wife and mother, who are both detained in Xinjiang.(Supplied: Almas Nizamidin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;I want to ask my Australian Government to protect me and my family \u2014 I have no hope without the Australian Government,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In April this year, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) advised him that Chinese officials had sentenced Buzainafu to seven years in jail for &#8220;assembling a crowd to disturb social order&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Nizamidin said he was told his mother, who he has also been unable to reach, was accused of committing the same crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An online petition started by Amnesty International calling on Chinese authorities to release Buzainafu has so far received almost 24,000 signatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Nizamidin said he had proof that his wife was innocent, and he called on the Australian Government to protect the families of its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We only want to reunite with our family,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As a husband, as a son, I really want to reunite with my family.
