{"id":1159,"date":"2019-11-14T23:46:50","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T14:46:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yuzb.net\/en\/?p=1159"},"modified":"2019-11-14T23:46:50","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T14:46:50","slug":"china-running-more-camps-in-xinjiang-than-thought-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yuzb.net\/en\/2019\/11\/14\/china-running-more-camps-in-xinjiang-than-thought-group\/","title":{"rendered":"China running more camps in Xinjiang than thought: group"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/front\/archives\/2019\/11\/14\/2003725807?fbclid=IwAR01fOR7Wspq4zW_M6H5rOkwYdevwIYfp2o7v2F156nKSy_easEZws5Pw6I\">http:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/front\/archives\/2019\/11\/14\/2003725807?fbclid=IwAR01fOR7Wspq4zW_M6H5rOkwYdevwIYfp2o7v2F156nKSy_easEZws5Pw6I<\/a>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AFP, ARLINGTON, Texas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uighur activists on Tuesday said that they have documented nearly 500 camps and prisons run by China to detain members of the ethnic group, alleging that Beijing could be holding far more than the commonly cited figure of 1 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Washington-based East Turkistan National Awakening Movement, a group that seeks independence for the Xinjiang region, gave the geographic coordinates of 182 suspected \u201cconcentration camps\u201d where Uighurs are allegedly pressured to renounce their culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researching imagery from Google Earth, the group said it also spotted 209 suspected prisons and 74 suspected labor camps, for which it would share details later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn large part, these have not been previously identified, so we could be talking about far greater numbers\u201d of people detained, movement director of operations Kyle Olbert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf anything, we are concerned that there may be more facilities that we have not been able to identify,\u201d he told a news conference in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anders Corr, an analyst who formerly worked in US intelligence and who advised the group, said that about 40 percent of the sites had not been previously reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rights advocates have generally estimated that China is detaining more than 1 million Uighurs and members of other predominantly Muslim ethnicities, but US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Randall Schriver in May said that the figure was \u201clikely closer to 3 million citizens\u201d \u2014 an extraordinary number in a region of about 20 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olbert said that archive imagery from alleged camp sites showed consistent patterns \u2014 steel and concrete construction over the past four years, along with security perimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the group tried to verify the nature of each site with on-the-ground accounts, but declined to give greater detail, citing the need to protect sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the allegations were \u201cbaseless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEast Turkestan organizations outside China have long conducted activities harming China\u2019s national security,\u201d ministry spokesman Geng Shuang (\u803f\u723d) said at a regular media briefing in Beijing yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said it was \u201cclear for all to see\u201d that China\u2019s policies in Xinjiang had promoted \u201cethnic unity and social harmony.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activists and witnesses say China is using torture to forcibly integrate Uighurs into the Han majority, including pressuring Muslims to give up tenets of their faith \u2014 such as praying, and abstaining from pork and alcohol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olbert described China\u2019s policy as \u201cgenocide by incarceration,\u201d fearing that Uighurs would be held indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like boiling a frog. If they were to kill 10,000 people a day, the world might take notice, but if they were just to keep everyone imprisoned and let them die off naturally, perhaps the world might not notice.
