It includes the \npresent-day administrative areas of the so-called \u201cXinjiang\u201d* Uyghur \nAutonomous Region and parts of western Gansu and Qinghai Province that \nwere annexed by China during the 1940s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>*The\n Chinese colonial term \u201cXinjiang\u201d meaning \u2018The New Territory\u2019 or \u2018New \nFrontier\u2019 was imposed by the Chinese occupational forces in reference to\n East Turkistan. <strong>The derogatory Chinese colonial term is highly offensive and strongly hated by the people of East Turkistan.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>Eastern\n Turkistan has maintained throughout its history a distinctive and \nsovereign national, cultural, and religious identity separate from that \nof China and, except during periods of illegal Chinese occupation, has \nmaintained a separate and sovereign political and territorial identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalawakening.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Map-of-East-Turkistan-English-now7flm88k3yqyo6tpx7krx0na3atdy0lv8q1z7amg-300x300.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalawakening.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Map-of-East-Turkistan-with-Neighbors-NEW.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Land Size:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1,828,418\n square kilometers, which includes the Tarim Basin, Junggar Basin, and \nKengsu.&nbsp; The \u201cUyghur Autonomous Region\u201d, consisting of the Tarim and \nJunggar Basin makes up the bulk of East Turkistan, consisting of \n1,664,845 square kilometers. Kengsu (annexed into Gansu and Qinghai \nProvinces by Chinese forces in the 1940s) makes up 163, 573 square \nkilometers. Roughly 2.65 times the size of the US State of Texas, 3 \ntimes the size of France, and equivalent to the size of Sudan (North \nSudan)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Political Status:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Occupied country (since December 22, 1949) and without United Nations\u2019 Representation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Administration:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under\n Chinese rule, East Turkistan is divided into the following \nadministrative units: a) Uyghur Autonomous Region, b) Subei Mongol \nAutonomous County,&nbsp; Aksai Kazakh Autonomous County,&nbsp; Dunhuang (Dukhan) \nCity, and Guazhou County in Gansu Province, c) Lenghu Administrative \nZone, and the western portion of Magnai Administrative Zone in Qinghai \nProvince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Population:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total Turkic \npopulation of East Turkistan is around 35 million (with over 30 million \nUyghurs, and the rest are of other Turkic populations such as the \nKazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and Tatars).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Major Rivers:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tarim,\n Ertish (Irtysh in Kazakhstan and Russia), Illi, Konchi (Kaidu), Ulungur\n (Bulgan in Mongilia), Qaraqash, Yarkand (also known as Zarafshan), and \nManas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Native Wildlife:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caspian tiger (now \nextinct), Eurasian lynx, Snow leopard, Eurasian gray wolf, sable, \nwolverine, Prezwalski\u2019s horse,&nbsp; Altai wapiti (elk), Tengri Tagh wapiti \n(elk),&nbsp; Bactrian deer, Yarkand deer, Central Asian red deer, Saiga \nantelope, Marco Polo Sheep, Yak, Bactrian camel, Eurasian beaver, \nEurasian red squirrel, Dzungarian hamster, Yarkand hare, Eurasian water \nvole, Eurasian spoonbill, Central Asian salamander,&nbsp; Big-head \nschizothoracin, and the Lenok (Asiatic trout).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Economy:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agriculture, animal husbandry, light industry, and trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Natural Resources:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Land,\n biological resources, petroleum, natural gas,&nbsp; gold, silver, coal, \nuranium, copper, nickel, lead, zinc, asbestos, sylvite, limestone, gems,\n and jade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Literacy Rate:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>90% prior to removal of native Turkic (Uyghur, Kazakh, Kyrgyz) language classes.
