{"id":1936,"date":"2020-09-21T21:09:47","date_gmt":"2020-09-21T12:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yuzb.net\/en\/?p=1936"},"modified":"2020-09-21T22:24:48","modified_gmt":"2020-09-21T13:24:48","slug":"china-defends-its-vocational-training-centres-in-xinjiang-white-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/yuzb.net\/en\/2020\/09\/21\/china-defends-its-vocational-training-centres-in-xinjiang-white-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"China defends its \u2018vocational training centres\u2019 in Xinjiang white paper"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3101986\/china-claims-vocational-training-given-nearly-13-million-people <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China released a white paper on Thursday claiming that its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/xinjiang\">far western Xinjiang region<\/a>&nbsp;has provided \u201cvocational training\u201d to nearly 1.3 million workers every year on average from 2014 to 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It comes as Beijing is facing mounting criticism from Western countries and human rights groups over its policies in the region, where it is believed to have detained at least 1 million Uygurs and other ethnic Muslim minorities in internment camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has been accused of subjecting detainees to political indoctrination and forced labour in the camps, but it has denied the allegations and insisted they are \u201cvocational training centres\u201d where people learn language and job skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two observers said the white paper from the State Council, China\u2019s cabinet, could be the first time the authorities had \u201cindirectly\u201d confirmed the scale of the camps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"China sanctions US officials and Congress members in response to Xinjiang ban\" width=\"760\" height=\"428\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_WpJyoDaqDQ?start=4&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China sanctions US officials and Congress members in response to Xinjiang ban<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Titled \u201cEmployment and Labour Rights in Xinjiang\u201d, the white paper said the regional government had organised \u201cemployment-oriented training on standard spoken and written Chinese, legal knowledge, general know-how for urban life and labour skills\u201d to improve the structure of the workforce and combat poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It had provided vocational training to an average of 1.29 million urban and rural workers every year from 2014 to 2019, the white paper said, apparently not using the Chinese government\u2019s five-year planning period as the reporting time frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those workers, about 451,400 were from southern Xinjiang \u2013 an area it said struggled with extreme poverty, poor access to education and a lack of job skills because residents were influenced by \u201cextremist thoughts\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EVERY OTHER SATURDAYSCMP Global Impact&nbsp;NewsletterBy submitting, you consent to receiving marketing emails from SCMP. It\u2019s basically trying to explain to the US that \u2018I didn\u2019t do anything, there\u2019s been some misunderstanding\u2019,\u201d Shih said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut it doesn\u2019t address the important points \u2013 there have been anti-Muslim issues.
