entails<\/li><li>The camps have added to tensions with the United States and other Western nations<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The US and some Western nations have issued sharp rebukes after the United Nations and rights groups estimated between 1 million and 2 million people, mostly ethnic Uyghurs, were detained as part of a sweeping anti-terrorism campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uyghurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority, have been locked in political turmoil with China for more than 200 years as Beijing has sought to wrest control of the vast region under various administrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chinese Communist Party brought it under full control in 1949 and later renamed it the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-12-09\/major-religions-in-china-map.jpg\/11781880\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/image\/10396730-3x2-700x467.jpg\" alt=\"China's major religions\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-12-09\/major-religions-in-china-map.jpg\/11781880\"><strong>PHOTO:<\/strong>&nbsp;Islam dominates the semi-autonomous region of Xinjiang.&nbsp;(Supplied: Purdue University&#8217;s Centre on Religion and Chinese Society)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-05\/china-xinjiang-urumqi-riots-10th-anniversary-uyghur-muslims\/11270320\">Following deadly riots in 2009<\/a>&nbsp;between Han Chinese \u2014 the dominant ethnicity within mainland China \u2014 and Uyghurs in the territory&#8217;s capital, Urumqi, Beijing has cracked down on the ethnic minority, which has led others to conclude this represents a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-14\/chinas-crackdown-on-uyghurs-tearing-families-apart\/11221614\">campaign of cultural genocide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-14\/chinas-crackdown-on-uyghurs-tearing-families-apart\/11221614\">Xinjiang families torn apart<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-14\/chinas-crackdown-on-uyghurs-tearing-families-apart\/11221614\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-07-14\/chinas-crackdown-on-uyghurs-tearing-families-apart\/11221614\">China&#8217;s mass internment of its ethnic Uyghur population appears to be the largest imprisonment of people on the basis of religion since the Holocaust.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently leaked documents revealed the lengths of the crackdown, where a Uyghur could end up in detention simply for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-11-28\/xinjiang-hong-kong-secret-no-5656\/11742632\">fasting before dawn, wearing a headdress or beard, owning a compass or tent or refusing to hand over a phone to be scanned<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has claimed these detention camps are simply vocational training centres and Xinjiang&#8217;s Governor, Shohrat Zakir, told reporters in Beijing on Monday that detainee estimates published in foreign media were &#8220;pure fabrication&#8221;, without giving details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The US is getting restless and has launched a smear campaign against Xinjiang,&#8221;
